Inadditiontomyhelpingoutinmyfather’sbusiness,Ihavehadnumerousotherworkexperiencesthatfurtherenhancemyqualificationsforthisprogram.MyresumeenumeratesthevariouspositionsIhaveheldatKerasotesTheaters,Chili’srestaurants,andIndianaUniversity’snewStudentRecreationalSportsCenter(SRSC),andwhatallofthesepositionshaveincommonisanemphasisonservingthepubliceffectively.Further,asanassistantmanagerattheShowplace11andastaffcoordinatorattheSRSC,Ihavegainedvaluableexpertiseinmanagingemployeesandcreatingworkschedules.Bothofthesepositionshaveallowedmetodevelopmysalesandpeopleskills,whichareextremelyimportantinanincreasinglyservice-drivenmarketplace.

Notallofmyworkexperiencehasbeenasapaidemployee.PartofmyvolunteeringexperienceatMiddlewayHouse,thelocalbatteredwomen’sshelter,involvedextensiveworkoncomputers,includingwordprocessing,organizingdatabasesandcreatingspreadsheets.Also,IrecentlyparticipatedinaninternshipprogramforacademiccreditwiththeEliLillycorporationinthepersonneldivision.Asamanagementintern,IwasabletowatchtheworkingsofamajorcorporationupcloseandwouldliketheopportunitytocombinemyexperienceswiththetheoreticalbackgroundavailableintheMBAprogramatIUB,withitsemphasisoncomputers,marketingandhumanresources.

MysuccessfulinternshipisoneelementofmyoverallacademicsuccessasanundergraduatehereatIUB,yetIhavealsomadetimeforavarietyofextracurricularactivities,includingworkingformysororityandcompetinginintramuralbasketball.MypositiveexperiencesherehaveresultedinmydesiretostayinBloomingtontocontinuemyacademicendeavors;furthermore,continuingmyeducationherewouldallowmetomakeimportantbusinesscontacts,withthecareergoalofopeningmyowncomputerconsultingfirmintheMidwest.

IhavealwaysenjoyedstudyingMaths,PhysicsandChemistry,andIwouldliketheopportunitytocontinuethisstudy.ChemicalEngineeringappealstomebecauseofthechallengesinvolvedintheapplicationofscientifictheorytopractical,realworldproblemssuchashowtodealwithnuclearwaste.IparticularlylookforwardtostudyingfluiddynamicsasIwasintroducedtothisduringtheEngineeringEducationScheme(EES).Iamawarethatintoday’sworldchemicalengineeringhasanincreasinglyimportantroleacrossawiderangeofindustriesfrompharmaceuticalstopetrochemicals.Thebroadrangeofcareerpaths,andtheopportunitytocontributetosocietythroughtechnologicalinnovation,isforme,oneofthemainattractionsofchemicalengineering.

IhaveappliedtotakepartintheYearInIndustryschemeduringwhichIhopetogainpracticalexperience,aswellasgreatermaturityenablingmetogointomydegreecoursewithimprovedskillsandbroaderexperience.Ialsohopetostudye-learningcoursesonprojectmanagementandpresentationskillsrunbytheIChemE.InYear12ItookpartintheEES,whichimprovedmyunderstandingandskillsinteamworking,timemanagement,andreportwriting,aswellasvisualandoralpresentation.Throughoutthecourseoftheprojecttheteamhadtofrequentlycorrespondwithmentorsinindustryandacademiaandthisexperiencehasbroadenedmyappreciationofpracticeandapplicationinareallifesituation.InJulyIattendedaweek-long‘IntoEngineering’seminarrunbyREACTEngineering.Workingintwoteams,weweregivenadesignexercisebaseduponatypicaldecommissioningproject.IalsoattendedaHeadstartcourseatNewcastleUniversity,whichIthoroughlyenjoyed.Oneofthemainactivitieswastodesign,manufactureandtestasmallcrane.Ifoundbothoftheseexperiencesverychallenging,asweweregivenonlylimitedtimesowehadtoprioritiseourtasksandcarefullyplanourwork.

ThisyearafellowstudentandIwereawarded￡500bytheEuropeanScholarshipPrizetofundavisittoPraguetodoresearchforourA-levelHistorycoursework.Igainedanunderstandingofthecity’scultureandhistoryandfurtherdevelopedmyindependence.DuringthesummerIrepresentedmyschoolonaConnexionsreviewofagovernmentwhitepaperon14-19education.Igainedaninsightintothegovernment’sproposalsandlearnedalotaboutworkingwithdifferentgroupsofpeople.LastyearIwaspartoftheeditorialteamfortheschoolmagazine.IwroteanumberofarticlesandIwasresponsibleforensuringthatstaffcontributionswerereadyforthedeadline.Ialsoenjoyparticipatinginarangeofsportsandhaverepresentedtheschoolatfootballandcricket,whichhasfurtherenhancedmyteamworkingskills.

InmysparetimeIamworkingtowardsmyDukeofEdinburghGoldAward.InSeptemberIcompleteda4-dayexpeditionintheLakeDistrict,whichtestedmyendurancebutgavemeagreatsenseofachievement.AspartoftheawardIhavebeenhelpingatthelocalyouthcaféonceaweek,whichIamreallyenjoyingasitgivesmethechancetomeetnewpeople.Ialsoenjoyreading,particularlybooksonphysicsandRussianhistory.IamreallyinterestedincomputersandIamcurrentlytryingtoconfigureaLinuxbasedfileandprintserverformyhomenetwork.
